Resizing engagement rings and wedding bands. How to resize a ring?

What is the Process of Sizing a Ring?

Sizing a ring begins with whether we are either going up or going down in size. We always begin these consultations with using our tools to see what size your ring is currently at, and what size it needs to be.

Sizing a Ring Up

When sizing a ring up we will be expanding the inner radius and adding metal to the ring. The jeweler begins by making a small cut at the bottom of the shank, this is the "sizing area." From there she will use a specialized tool that looks like a rod that will expand the size of the ring. The jeweler then adds metal into the gap and solders and welds the ring back together. After soldering, the ring is smoothed and polished to ensure it maintains its original design and look.

Sizing a Ring Down

For sizing the ring down the process is the same, but instead of adding metal, we will be removing metal. After the metal has been removed, just like last time, the ring is repolished and refinished to bring it back to its original beauty.

How Much Does it Cost to Size a Ring?

There are several factors that determine the overall cost to size a ring. Seven Oaks will be able to provide you an accurate estimate on the repair once we are able to view it. Some of those factors include:

1. Size Change: One of the biggest factors that determines the amount that the sizing will cost is the amount of size that we have to change a ring by. For example, if we are taking down a ring 1/2 a size then it is going to cost much less than if we are going up by 3 sizes.

2. Ring Material: Rings made from materials like gold, silver, and platinum may cost different amounts do to the price of the metals and the complexity of working on it.

3. Complexity: Rings with intricate designs, colored gemstones, or engravings may cost more because they will require more time and expertise to resize.

In general we see ring resizing cost anywhere from $100-$200, but as discussed priorly the amount can fluctuate on either side depending on the qualities of your ring. The best bet would be to contact us so that we can provide you with an exact estimate.
