Jewelry Care

Recommended Care For All Jewelry

1. Take it off before bed.

The fibers on your bedding rub against your jewelry which thins your metal and negatively affects its durability.

2. Take it off when swimming.

The harsh chemical in choline and the salt in ocean water can strip your metal and reduces its luster.

3. Take it off when doing any physical activity.

So many accents happen, eliminate those chances by just simply taking it off.

4. Put it on last.

Lotions, cosmetics, hair spray, hair products, and perfumes build up on your jewelry which reduces its luster and durability.

5. Store it somewhere dry.

Humidity can accelerate tarnishing and reduced luster

Specific Jewelry Care

Sterling Silver

Silver is soft and easily scratched. Use a polishing cloth or microfiber cloth to polish your jewelry. Avoid using paper towels or tissues on your jewelry as they have fibers that may cause scratching.

Contact with household chemicals, perspiration, rubber, chlorinated water, or any substances which contain sulfur (e.g., mayonnaise, eggs, mustard, onions, latex, wool), will cause corrosion and tarnish — so it’s a smart idea to remove silver jewelry when doing household chores. Lotions, cosmetics, hair spray, hair products, and perfumes will accelerate tarnishing.  Direct sunlight also causes silver to tarnish, so be sure to take off your silver jewelry before you go swimming and sunbathing.

To clean your sterling silver jewelry you can pick up polishing clothe formulated specifically to remove tarnish. Tarnish is most easily removed when it first becomes visible. To store your sterling silver jewelry keep in an anti-tarnish bag or clothe.

14k and 18k Gold

Since gold is a natural element, it is affected by harsh chemicals such as chlorine or other cleaning products. We recommend that you remove your jewelry when using chemicals to reduce daily abrasions and prolong the luster.  A simple home remedy for cleaning your yellow, rose or white gold jewelry is to mix a little dish soap with warm water in a bowl. Let your gold jewelry soak for 2-3 minutes. Remove the jewelry and scrub with a soft, clean toothbrush. Dry with a microfiber cloth then polish with a jewelry cloth. Repeat as often as you would like. When not worn, store your gold pieces in soft cloth bags or the original box to protect them from the elements of daily exposure.

Platinum

It’s easy. Simply soak platinum in a mild solution of warm soapy water, and then gently scrub it with a soft-bristled brush. To get your platinum shining like new bring it in to Seven Oaks Fine Jewelers to get polished by one of our certified jewelers.
